Mulatto: A Darker Shade of Pale is Luma R. Brieuc's current ongoing creative project. In spite of the number of women and men who are of mixed racial heritage, it is very surprising that so little has been written on the lives of individuals who are the fruit of one black parent and the other white. The artist/author — herself having a white mother and a black father — was inspired to explore the unique experience of being a mulatto: having to integrate and harmonize the polarities of two opposite cultures (marked by racial tension throughout history) and having, at the same time, to “undefine” oneself as either black or white. Illustrated with beautiful photography and filled with thought-provoking interviews from mulattos of all ages and from all walks of life, the book will give readers a glimpse of their unique journeys, how they each differ but also what the common denominators are that makes them so similar.
